📺 25 seconds of fresh gameplay footage shown off in the new trailer
Today we learned that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the official name of the next Zelda game, replacing the Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 placeholder we’ve been using since the sequel was first announced by Nintendo in 2019.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom pre-orders are now live on Amazon and Best Buy, and we have a concrete release date for the first time: Friday, May 12, 2023. This makes the game seem a little more real after it was delayed earlier this year from 2022 to spring 2023. The game will be available for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and the newer Nintendo Switch OLED consoles – so far.
There’s a chance that new Nintendo Siwtch hardware will be announced between now and then, as Nintendo said it won’t have new console hardware in its current fiscal quarter (ending May 31, 2023) – meaning it’s “game on” after April 2023.
In addition to the official name and release date, we also got about 25 seconds of fresh gameplay footage from today’s Nintendo Direct trailer. It shows Link traversing the majestic and open world of Hyrule and there’s a reference to “Link’s endless adventure” that’s sparked rumors that time travel will play a pivotal role in this game.
That begs the question: is it The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom with tears as in 😭 crying, or Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom as in 💔 you’re tearing me apart (Lisa)? We’ll know soon enough when Nintendo launches the game in May of next year (or when someone from Nintendo pronounces the name in the next Direct video).
While you wait for Tears of the Kingdom… you can play another classic, this one from the N64 era: the GoldenEye 007 remaster, coming to Nintendo Online and Xbox Game Pass “soon.“ And almost every Splatoon 3 review suggests it’s a solid Nintendo Switch game that’s going to be another sleeper hit, despite launching last Friday. There’s plenty to do until the new Zelda game arrives on May 12.
