A new ‘pinch to zoom’ feature is now available for YouTube Premium subscribers to test, allowing you to get a closer look at any videos you’re watching.
Spotted by 9to5Google, the feature works exactly like we’ve become accustomed to on other apps like photos: simply use two fingers to zoom into an area on the screen. You can even move around to look at other parts of the video while zoomed in.
Zooming into a video might seem unnecessary to some, but it could prove useful when viewing videos in portrait mode. It could also be handy for tutorial videos where you might want to get a closer look at what’s being shown.
YouTube Premium subscribers already enjoy several benefits over non-paying users, such as background play, the ability to download videos, and no ads. The lack of adverts alone is one of the many reasons why I canceled Spotify for YouTube Premium, but being able to test features early is another nice perk.
How to turn on pinch to zoom
Click on your profile photo on the YouTube app and then ‘Your Premium benefits’. You’ll find the ‘Try new features’ page here, where you can turn on pinch to zoom.
The feature may take a while to activate, but once it does, you can zoom into videos at up to 8x, which is pretty impressive.
The feature is only available until September 1, so make sure you try it out before it’s gone and leave any feedback you might have. Once Google’s gathered up all the information it needs, it’s likely pinch to zoom will roll out fully in the future. However, it may be another Premium-only perk.
