The Last of Us Part 1 on PS5 isn’t a “cash grab” says developer – but is it really necessary?
Naughty Dog’s remake of The Last of Us has been questioned by some fans
A developer has jumped to the defense of The Last of Us Part 1 remake after some commenters labeled it a “cash grab.”
Robert Morrison, who worked on the upcoming PS5 remake, took to Twitter to defend the game, insisting that it’s “the most meticulously built and crafted project that I have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career.”
Morrison has an impressive resume, having worked on Santa Monica Studios’ God of War 2018 reboot, Injustice 2, and Resident Evil 7. The animator said that The Last of Us Part 1 has been built with “the highest level of care and attention to detail possible,” but it still begs the question: did Naughty Dog need to remake the game in the first place?

📅 The Last of Us Part 1 releases on September 2
The Last of Us was released on PS3 in 2013 and was remastered for PS4 in 2014. The Last of Us Remastered, which is playable on PS5, introduced a 4K 30fps mode and a 1080p 60fps mode, meaning you could opt for a higher resolution version or a smoother frame rate.
The Last of Us Part 1 is set to arrive eight years after The Last of Us Remastered but is priced at $70. That’s the norm for first-party games from Sony on PS5; however, it’s a steep price considering this is still the same game many have already played before, albeit with improved graphics, controls, and accessibility options.
In a follow-up tweet, Morrison added that while the price of the remake may be deemed too expensive for some, value is ultimately subjective.
“The price of the game is out of my control and worth is subjective to each individual," Morrison said. "You can decide for yourself if you want it or not. All I’m saying is I am in awe of the work that an amazing group of people did on the project. A tremendous amount of passion was put into it.”
The Last of Us Part 1 releases on September 2 and is set to be one of the biggest PS5 exclusives this year. You may need to consider picking up one of the best SSDs for PS5, as the game’s file size is a whopping 79GB.
