PSVR 2 just got its first killer app in Resident Evil Village
Lady Dimitrescu is coming to stomp on your face next February
➡️ The Shortcut Skinny: Resident Evil Village VR
😮 Resident Evil Village VR will be free for owners of the base game
🙌 It’ll be released on the same day as PSVR 2, making it a launch title for Sony’s next-gen headset
👢 It has big shoes to fill after Resident Evil 7 VR wowed fans
😏 If nothing else, it’ll give us something to play on PSVR 2 at launch
Resident Evil Village VR will be released as free DLC for anyone who owns the base game when the port launches next year.
The VR version of Resident Evil Village will release the same day as PSVR 2 – February 22, 2023 – making it a launch title for Sony’s next-gen VR headset, along with Horizon: Call of the Mountain and No Man’s Sky.
According to a new PlayStation Blog post, Resident Evil Village VR will be released as free DLC for everyone who already owns the base game, or its Gold Edition.
Not only does that mean you won’t have to shell out for the game a second time, it’ll also give you something to immediately play on the PSVR 2 after picking it up. Many of the PSVR 2 games announced so far don’t have concrete release dates, so it's great to see more games confirmed for launch.
As you’d expect, the port brings the entirety of Village’s main story into VR, so you can scare yourself silly by running away from Lady Dimitrescu all over again. The blog post makes no mention of the game’s arcade-y Mercenaries mode, however, so we’ll have to wait and see if that ever makes it over.
Resident Evil Village VR is one of the most anticipated PSVR 2 games currently announced. The headset’s 4K HDR display should make it look gorgeous (or gorgeously frightening), and Sony is making a big show of the PSVR 2’s new Sense controllers. You’ll be able to attack, reload and block by swinging your arms about, as well as dual-wield weapons – a first for the game.
Resident Evil 7 VR was one of the biggest attractions for the original PSVR system, so we’ve high hopes Village can follow or even eclipse its predecessor. And if you’re desperate for even more VR horror action, know that the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake is due to get PSVR 2 content as well, although we’ve yet to see whether it will be a full VR port.
The PSVR 2 will release next year for $599, but is already up for pre-order. Keep tabs on our PSVR 2 pre-order page for the latest updates and stock announcements. Of course, you’ll need to secure a PS5 restock to use the next-gen headset.
