The iPhone 14 Apple launch event is now over for another year, and we finally know all the juicy details about each iPhone 14 model, including those all-important release dates.
There are four iPhone models to consider this year, from the iPhone 14 to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. We’ll look at each of them to help you decide which one is right for you, and ensure you get one with our iPhone pre-order guide.
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus: price, release date, and specs
The iPhone 14’s release date is September 16, and prices start from $799. The larger iPhone 14 Plus, which has a 6.7-inch screen, arrives slightly later on October 17 and costs $899. The new Apple phone has seen some upgrades to the camera, with a 12MP main camera with a larger sensor and a faster f/1.5 aperture. The end result should improve low-light photos by 49%. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus can also shoot ultra-wide angle shots.
Like the Apple Watch Series 8, the new iPhone includes Crash Detection, should you ever be involved in a serious collision, and a new Action mode that provides wobble-free video, no matter how shaky your footage might be.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus comes in five new colors: Blue, Purple, Midnight, Starlight, and Product(Red). Regarding capacities, there are 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB models to choose from.
In the US, Apple has opted to ditch the traditional physical SIM card in favor of an eSIM. Apple thinks it will improve security and should make setting up your new phone more seamless, but it might cause a few teething issues for those who like to travel or are used to having multiple SIM cards.
iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max: price, release date, and specs
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max release date is October 9, and both models are available to pre-order today. Apple’s flagship smartphone costs $999 for the iPhone 14 Pro and $1099 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The Pro Max has a larger 6.7-inch screen and a more durable battery.
Both iPhone 14 Pro models are packed with features, including the new Dynamic Island which replaces the maligned “notch” with something far more useful. The small pill-like camera bar can now transform into a hub for notifications, letting you see when your AirPod Pros are connected, or how long is left on a timer. It’s very clever, but some will still bemoan the fact Apple hasn’t figured out a way to provide a seamless display.
The iPhone Pro and Pro Max come with Apple’s best-in-class 48MP camera, promising all-day battery life, an always-on display, and a new front camera with auto-focus. You can also shoot video in cinematic 4K resolution at 24fps.
Why trust my iPhone 14 release date information?
Apple has now confirmed the iPhone 14 release date, and it was exactly as I predicted. I’ve been tracking and writing about the iPhone 14 release date for several months and every new iPhone for over a decade for various media outlets, most recently at TechRadar before I launched The Shortcut. Nearly every iPhone announcement date has been in the first or second week of September every year, and iPhone 14 leaks suggest the same pattern in 2022.
My earlier iPhone 14 release date prediction
The iPhone 14 release date is September 16, 2022, as I predicted a few weeks ago. Apple consistently releases its new iPhone on a Friday in September (either the second or third Friday). This is usually the date when you can expect to be able to buy the iPhone 14 in stores, or more likely pick up your iPhone 14 pre-order or have it shipped to your front door. If you pre-order the iPhone and in-store pick-up, you can get the iPhone at 8am ET local time.
Why one week earlier than usual? The Apple launch event took place on Wednesday, September 7 at 1pm ET. This is one week earlier than anyone had expected. If you carefully read into the iPhone release date history, when the iPhone 7 was released on September 16, that month also began on a Thursday (so it wasn’t a full week). In 2022, September begins on a Thursday, too, meaning there was reason to believe the iPhone 14 release date would be September 16.

For the most part, the iPhone release date history suggested that the iPhone 14 would release on Friday, September 16. You’ll begin to see launch line coverage like this.
In recent years, only once – during the global lockdown in 2020 – has Apple delayed a new iPhone release date, according to my iPhone date tracking. Outside of that completely understandable instance, there has been a new iPhone release date during the third week in September dating back to the iPhone 7 (in 2016) when Apple released that year’s iPhone earlier than expected: during the second full week in September (for the release date). A new iPhone release date has otherwise been September from the iPhone 5 onward, so pretty consistent.

No iPhone 14 Mini release date
Get ready for disappointment. Every iPhone 14 leak in 2022 suggested that Apple wouldn’t release an iPhone 14 Mini in 2022, which was the case. Here’s why: the smallest flagship iPhone (besides the iPhone SE 2022) doesn’t get love from consumers, even though a certain category of people (with loud voices) say they love smaller screens.
Most love a manageable form factor, but would like a larger screen (cue the iPhone Flip or a foldable iPhone release date… eventually). That’s why Apple launched the iPhone 14 as the cheapest model and debuted an iPhone 14 Plus with a 6.7-inch display.
The eventual solution may be the iPhone Flip, the theorized name for Apple’s first foldable smartphone. But the iPhone 14, nor any other new iPhone, will do any of the fancy foldable stuff that I’ve demoed in my recent Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 review. Apple isn’t ready to launch such a device, and it’ll sooner have VR headset, allegedly codenamed “Reality Pro” or “Reality One” in 2023. Apple is likely to take its time in launching an iPhone with a foldable screen.
