Microsoft is bringing Discord voice chat to the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Xbox One in a future update, allowing those on console, mobile, and PC to communicate with each other using the popular networking app.
The long-requested feature will make cross-play far more seamless, as you can quickly hit up a friend on PC to jump into supported titles like Minecraft or Halo Infinite. You can also join any voice channel, which means you can chat with all your friends no matter what device they’re playing on.

Like Party Chat on Xbox, you can adjust the sound, switch between Discord Voice and Xbox game chat while on your console, and see who’s in the call and speaking.
The Discord Xbox update is rolling out to Xbox Insiders first and will be available to everyone at a later date. If you’d like to become an Xbox Insider, you can learn how to join the program here.
🤔How to enable Discord voice chat on Xbox
You’ll need to connect your Xbox account to your Discord account to get Discord on your Xbox. You’ll need to do this even if you’ve connected your Xbox and Discord accounts before, as new permissions need to be granted to enable voice chat on your console.
On Discord, head to your accounts in ‘User Settings’ > ‘Connections’ on desktop, web, or mobile, and select the Xbox logo within the ‘Connections’ menu. Follow the prompts, and you’ll have successfully connected the two accounts.

Connecting your Xbox and Discord accounts allows you to display your Gamertag, your current game, and how long you’ve played a title in your user profile. In the future, you’ll also be able to voice chat directly from your Xbox console.
📞 Transfer your Discord voice calls to Xbox
The next step is to transfer your voice calls from Discord to your Xbox. You’ll need the Xbox mobile app installed on your mobile, so download it now if you haven’t. Once installed, head to Discord on mobile or desktop and hop in a voice channel. You’ll then see an option to ‘Transfer Discord audio’ to your Xbox.
Click on ‘Transfer audio,’ and the Xbox mobile app will automatically open and let you know it’s ready to connect your Xbox to the Discord voice channel. Hit confirm in the Xbox mobile app, and you’re good to go.
Essentially, you need to find a conversation you want to bring to Xbox using Discord, transfer it over, and that’s it. You can do this within servers, direct messages, and group DMs.
💭 Will Discord come to PS5?
It’s great to see Discord coming to Xbox, but it’s slightly surprising that it hasn’t come to PS5 first. Sony announced a partnership with the communication service in 2021, promising to integrate the platform into the PlayStation Network.
In a blog post outlining the partnership, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan said:
“Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.”
Voice and text chat could likely come to PlayStation consoles shortly then, but for now, Microsoft has managed to beat Sony to the punch.
