Apple has reportedly hired two of mobile developer Playdeo’s three cofounders to work on mixed reality projects.
According to mobilegamer.biz, Playdeo’s Jack Schulze and Timo Arnall resigned as directors of the company in March 2022, and are now working at Apple.
It’s long been rumored that Apple is working on an augmented and virtual reality headset, which was initially tipped by Bloomberg for release in 2022.
That’s clearly not going to happen, leaving Apple’s headset – if it is indeed working on one – to go up against the PSVR 2, which launches on February 22, and the Meta Quest 3.
Playdeo released Avo in 2019, an augmented reality game that lets you control a cute and cuddly-looking avocado through a pre-rendered video of real-world environments using your phone’s touchscreen. You can see how it was made in the video below.
Apple has hired Playdeo staff in the past, snagging Avo design lead Jonathan Topf in May 2019. Topf now works in Apple’s design and prototyping team, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Apple’s mixed reality headset is rumored to include iris scanning for payments and logging in and will have 14 cameras that can even capture your legs – something which Meta’s Horizon Worlds has struggled to achieve.
In other Apple news, the company could release two new MacBook Pro models next year and is working on a new Mac mini and Mac Pro. We could see a massive 16-inch iPad, which will be firmly aimed at creatives.
