Amazon has revealed a new voice tool for games, Alexa Game Control. The intriguing technology was announced at Gamescom 2022 and will let you control supported games using your voice.
You’ll be able to perform in-game actions, like swapping weapons and interacting with NPCs and use your voice in other intuitive ways. In Dead Island 2 specifically, which is one of the first games to support the new tech, you can access in-game features like navigation by saying “where is the nearest workbench” and even manipulate zombie hordes by saying “Hey zombie.”
You don’t need an Echo device to use Alexa Game Control, either – any microphone or headset connected to your PC or Xbox Series X|S will work.
Moreover, you won’t have to say the wake word “Alexa” every time you want to perform an action, which should make the feature more useful if you already use Alexa to control your smart home.
Speaking about Alexa Game Control on Amazon’s developer website, CEO at Plaion Group Klemens Kundratitz said:
“We are committed to building immersive games that people can play wherever and however they want to play them. This means that people can play games however they want: with physical media, digital editions, controllers and now voice.”
Dead Island 2 director Steve Bernstein added:
“We are excited to debut Alexa Game Control in Dead Island 2. Gamers will enjoy a more immersive gaming experience by using their voice to goad zombies, ask for help, activate special abilities during combat, and more, without having to say “Alexa,” use an Echo device, or purchase any special hardware.”
Alexa Game Control will only be available on the PC and Xbox Series X|S of Dead Island 2, which releases on February 3, 2023, after an eight-year wait. That doesn’t mean we won’t see the voice tech come to PS5 in the future, but for now, it’s a nice bonus for those who play the game on Xbox consoles and PC, especially for those who are after more accessibility options.
